Chapter 40
“You weren’t planning on telling me this at some point, were you?”
Ramon and Brian had been fortunate enough to find an empty room in the maze that was Mercy Medical’s surgical ward, and no sooner did Ramon shut the door and lower the blinds, Brian spun around and immediately began talking.
Ramon sighed and ran his fingers through his hair while his other hand reached for the badge latched onto his belt. It was a move of pure instinct, muscle memory ingrained into him even dating back to his days as a uniform in Los Angeles. He still hadn’t heard from Jorge yet, and Ramon didn’t like that.
“No,” he finally answered. “I was sworn to secrecy.”
Brian shook his head and wheeled toward the detective, chewing on his lower lip. By the time Brian stopped in front of Ramon, his knuckles were white and his fingernails were digging into the rubber tires on his wheelchair. “I could charge you with accessory,” he warned. “You know of an active crime taking place in this city, and you’ve said nothing. You are aiding and abetting a vigilante, to say nothing of ignoring your sworn duty as a cop.”
“Would you really have your own sister arrested?” Ramon shot back before he had a chance to stop himself. “Because you can’t charge me without charging her.”
Brian smirked at the absurdity of it all. Dereliction of duty might have been a military term, but it also applied in his case. His sister was breaking the law—a problem in and of itself, yet exacerbated by the badge on her hip and the title of Detective. Regardless of anyone’s personal feelings about Bounty’s presence, the fact remained that such a presence was against the law and as Assistant DA, Brian had a duty to uphold that law.
Sure, he could claim plausible deniability and look the other way, but how long could he keep that charade? To say nothing of how this knowledge would affect the progress he and Jill had made in recent weeks. Brian didn’t even want to think about that at the moment, but the question wedged its way into his head regardless.
“I may not have a choice,” Brian argued. “What if this leaks out somehow? What if we wake up in the morning and it’s front-page news?”
“You don’t know that it will.”
“You don’t know that it won’t!” Brian shook his head and cursed under his breath. “Who else knows?”
“Our captain.”
Brian’s eyes closed and he let out a ragged sigh. “I really don’t wanna have to charge a police captain with accessory, too.”
Ramon had no rebuttal for that, instead stuffing his hands into his pockets and watching Brian, as if he was waiting him out. Brian wheeled himself across the room until he was over by the window, which he stared out of in silence, watching as traffic crawled along Calvert Street.
It was an awkward situation, even removing the fact that Jill was his sister. Bounty had done her share of good in this city, even
